Running Watches For Long Distance Runners - What to Look For in a Basic Running Watch
With so many Running Watches on the market, it can be difficult to know how to compare them. If you are a runner, who is looking for a training watch you will also have particular needs, above those of the average jogger.
The typical casual runner who does one or two runs a week tops, probably only needs a cheap - sports watch with a basic stopwatch timer, but if you do anything more than this you will wish to consider a watch that provides some or all of the features runners need.
For the purpose of this article, we consider you a serious runner if you:
Do some form of structured interval training. Run in competitive races whether they be fun runs, track races or cross country events. Mix in some longer easier runs into your program. Keep a basic record of your training progress.
Like a casual runner, a serious runner's most essential requirement is to track the time of their runs. Almost all digital sports watches feature a basic chronograph stopwatch for this, so the most critical factor to consider is that your watch is comfortable to wear while running and you can easily view your stopwatch time.
Don't go so cheap that your watch does not have the ability to record lap splits within the current session. This can be useful for measuring individual laps times around a running track or between segments of a long run.
If you do a lot of interval training then a watch with an interval timer function can be invaluable. If you're not sure what I mean, a structured interval training session might go like this:
3 minutes running hard. 2 minutes rest. Repeat.
An interval timer is a sequence of countdown timers. When a countdown timer has counted down to zero, the next timer in the sequence begins and then the next and so on. Almost all sports watches will have a single countdown timer, but many don't support sequential countdown, so check closely if you think you need this feature. Our website has a list of interval timer watches if you are unsure.
Another useful feature that allows you to record multiple lap times over a single sessions is lap recall. This feature maintains a session history in the watch's memory, allowing you to browse a list of sessions by a date and time, then list the lap times of a selected session in order.
So in summary, a runner's watch has the following essential features:
A large clear display that is comfortable to view while running. A stopwatch chrono with the ability to record lap splits. The ability to store laps in memory. An interval timer mode, not just a single countdown timer.
Watches these features listed above can usually be found relatively cheaply, but usually cost slightly more than basic entry level jogging watch. Not all digital sports watches have an interval timer or multi-lap session storage ability, so be sure to check the feature list closely.
Most 30, 50 and 100 lap Timex Ironman watches deliver on all these features as do the entry level Polar RS watches, Nike Triax, Adidas Adistar and Vent Mini/Maxi watches from New Balance.
Note that the features listed here are just a minimum benchmark of features found in Runners Watches that runners find useful. Watches can get a lot more sophisticated (and expensive), but a watch that covers the essentials should be enough to cover your running needs and get you going quickly.

The Timex Ironman Watch Interval Timer - Great For Rep Training And House Cleaning
The timex ironman watch "interval timer" mode is not available in all ironman watches. I will present a list of watches that include this feature when I find time, but needless to say, if your ironman watch does not include this feature you can ignore this article completely.
I consider interval timer mode one of the more complicated features offered by the ironman line. Despite that timex designers have made it as simple as humanely possible. But if you take time to learn how to set up interval timer mode, there are some great benefits when it comes to activities like (but not limited to) interval training.
Here I give you a brief instruction on how to set up and interval training mode.
Please note: I attempt to keep this information as general as possible, but there are many timex ironman watch models on the market so this information might not apply precisely to all models out there. I do believe that the interval timer function works in a similar way in all ironman watches that offer this feature and what I say here will apply in most cases.
With that out of the way, let's get into it..
Interval timers are a sequence of linked countdown timers. When one countdown interval timer interval ends, an alert sounds and the next interval starts.
First, to get into interval timer mode, press the mode button repeatedly until the words "interval timer" are displayed on the screen.
Depending on your particular watch model you will have a number of timers available to be set. My timex datalink watch has 10 slots, but I have a feeling 10 is on the higher end. You may have a different numbers of slots available to you.
When selecting a fresh interval timer mode, int 1 will be displayed.
You may cycle through timers using stop/reset (-) or start/split (+).
I cannot display pictures here, but you can view a diagram of the standard ironman watch buttons by following the link in my signature.
Press next to set a timer. The value of the timer should flash.
While the number is flashing, pressing next again will cycle through units (hours, minutes, seconds), stop/reset (-) or start/split (+) will change the value (up or down) of the particular unit you are on.
When you are done setting the time period, press next again and you will be prompted on what to do at the end of the current interval.
Standard options are: "stop at end" (the session finishes when all timers expire) and "repeat at end" (when the last interval timer has stopped, the first one is started again. This pattern will be repeated over and over)
again stop/reset (-) or start/split (+) will toggle between options.
When you are done, press done to confirm and exit.
Now press start/split (+) to go to int 2 and set the next interval if you so wish.
note: to un-set a timer, set all it's values to 0 and it will be ignored. This even applies if there are gaps in the sequence. For example if you assign values to int 1 and int 3, but set int 2 to 0, when int 1 expires, int 3 will start next.
When you are ready to begin your interval session press start/lap to start the timer. As with many ironman features, you can exit interval timer mode and the timer will continue to run..
When the timer for int 1 reaches zero, an alarm will chime in to notify you that it has run it's course. If you configured any other of the interval timers, the next highest one will start at this point.
When all of the set interval timers have run their course one of two things will happen, depending on the way you configured your settings. If you selected "stop at end", the timex ironman watch will stop the timer and chime repeatedly for a period (10 seconds on my datalink), to signal to you that you have finished the session.
If you selected "repeat at end" the watch will chime once, move to int 1 and cycle through the sequence again.
You may stop the session at any time by pressing stop/reset.
The interval timer mode is a useful tool for athletes who wish to alternate between running and rest periods in their training workout.
For example if you wish to run for three minutes and take a one minute recovery break and repeat this over and over, you could set int 1 to 3:00 and int 2 to 1:00 and select the repeat at end option.
This is a great session for runners. In my usual training regime, I tend to stick to fixed distances and compare times against distance, but I think athletes often get too obsessed about times. This session would be a great one to throw in occasionally, for when you want to loosen up and just focus on the natural activity of running (or riding or swimming or whatever you do) without the worry that you're moving too slow.
Interval timer mode can also be applied to less conventional activities as well, like.... Housework. I read with astonishment the other day how one runner applies their timex ironman watch to the task of house cleaning.
I do not know if this runner is male or female, but they write:
i am in a running group. We use the interval timer so that we can take walk breaks on a regular basis. What we do is set one interval timer for maybe 5 minutes and the second for one minute and repeat both. This allows us to run for 5 minutes then the watch beeps to tell us to walk for one minute. Since the watch is set to repeat, this cycle of beeping for five minutes, then one minute continues for the duration of the run. You could not do this with the "timer" function because it repeats the one time again and again.
I also use the interval timer for house cleaning. I set one int. Timer so that I can work 45 minutes and the second so that I can take a 15 minute break . I do this if I will be working for several hours.

Ironman Tips You May Find Helpful
Here are a few bits of information I've thought of along the way that may be helpful to you. Please read them. Some are extremely important and could have a profound effect on your Ironman effort......
1) As race-week approaches, avoid any changes in your sleep pattern if possible.
2) Don't make any last minute changes to your equipment. If you are trying anything new, make sure you try it out 3 or 4 weeks before the event. Two serious mistakes I made: In my first ever Ironman--buying new tubes for race-day and having the wrong size and finding out an hour before the swim start of the biggest race of my life. In another race, buying new goggles at the Ironman fair because they looked pretty cool--and they leaked through-out the entire race...... Don't even think it...
3) This is important! Don't get a bike-tune up just before the big race! Do it a month before or 3 weeks before and RIDE IT! These guys make mistakes and you don't want to find out on the race course or have a disaster just before the race.. One year I made this mistake. Before my last training ride, I had a new chain put on with only 8 days to go until race-day. The chain was not put on properly with the correct tension and flew off while I was standing up in the pedals. I ended up with a concussion and a broken collar-bone. My Ironman was over for the year--before it even started. I should have been more careful and not left it so late. Never should have happened.
4) Don't change your diet the week prior to Ironman. Stay with what got you there. If possible--get a room with kitchen facilities and buy your own food. Cook what you cook at home. Be careful at the carbo load. After one carbo load pre-race dinner I developed food poisoning and it greatly effected my race. BE CAREFUL!
5) Practice wet-suit stripping at home. Get used to reaching around and pulling the zipper down. On race-day, unzip it as soon as you get out of the water and pull it off your arms and down to your hips. As you approach the wet-suit strippers, just lay down and they will each take one side and pull it off and hand it back to you.
6) Sometimes there will be chafing on the back of the neck from swimming with a wetsuit. To be safe, you can put a patch of waterproof tape on that area and that will be more comfortable.
7) Races like Ironman Canada can be cool in the morning. When you head out on the bike I would suggest arm-warmers if it is cool at all. Take a pair of those long sports socks and cut them off at the heel. They will slip nicely up your arm and will keep you warm and then you can just toss them at an aid station along the way. Save your brand new, expensive arm-warmers for training.
8) If you use a fuel belt, you can leave a (old) water bottle at special needs with your drink supplement and re-fill your small bottles from that. Then just toss the water-bottle at an aid station.
9) Make sure you wear a hat on race-day. You must stay as cool as possible. Fill the hat with cool water or ice and put it back on your head. Use sponges regularly on face, neck and shoulders. This is really important on those super hot days.
10) This may seem radical to some, but it you're planning your first Ironman and have not ever done a short tri, don't worry about it. Some people will say......"Oh, its a good way to practice transitions." Hey! If you're at home, unzip your wetsuit, lay on the floor and have 2 people pull it off. Go into bedroom, put on cycling clothes, put on helmet. Go to living room--get on wind-trainer. Congratulations! You've just done transitions one! Get off wind-trainer, run to bedroom with cycling shoes and helmet on. Come out with running shoes and cap on. Congratulations! You've just done transition two!
My theory is this. There is really nothing in that one short tri that is going to help you on Ironman day. As a matter of fact you could have a problem somewhere on the course and just have a plain, bad day. Now what are you going to think about your upcoming Ironman if you have problems with a short course? It can REALLY damage your self-confidence. It can cause self-doubt. Leave it for Ironman day. I even left my first open-water swim for my first Ironman race day.
11) Flat tires do happen. Practice changing a flat until you know exactly how you will do it and what tools you will need on race-day. Practice on the rear tire, because 9 times out of 10 thats the one that will go flat.
12) Some times it can be little confusing how to pin your numbers on if its your first Ironman. Here is the simplest method. Use a number belt. It goes around your waist and is secured with some sort of clasp or velcro. I used to wear a trisuit under my wetsuit and would put the belt and number on before the swimstart (you would only use one number). Remember: It's on your back for the bike and your front for the run. With this method all you have to do is take off your wetsuit and put on helmet and bike shoes and your transition is basically done. When you leave run transition just flip the number around to the front for the run portion. Even if you make a complete change for bike and run, I would still suggest a number pelt. It just doesn't work well to pin numbers directly onto the clothes you'll be racing in.
13) When I started out doing the Ironman I would leave my shoes and helmet with my bike. I found this is not a good idea for several reasons. You never know where your shoes will end up in all the action that takes place around the bike racks. There's not a lot of room between bikes. Your cycling shoes could end up anywhere. They can get kicked or run over and end up 4 bikes down from yours. I found it made more sense to just put them in the transition bag and change in the tent. Sure its awkward to get from the tent to your bike in cycling shoes, but you should be taking your time anyway. Don't run. Let your heart-rate come down. Relax. You'll be on that bike for a long time. Saving 20 seconds by RUNNING to your bike makes no sense at all. Put your sunglasses and helmet on as you make your way to your bike.
14) DURING THE MARATHON! There is tons!!! of different stuff at the aid stations. Don't try everything! You don't need stomach upset at this point in the race. Don't mix, cookies, fruit, power bars, gels, grapes etc. etc. etc.
If you take pop it will give you a short burst of energy. Then you will crash! The key is, once you start with the pop thing, do it at EVERY aid station for the rest of the race! Keep your sugar level even or do not start with the pop at all.
15) Some marathon aid stations have chicken soup. I know Canada does. you may have to ask for it. This can be a good thing for the heavy sodium content. Keep an eye out for it. Sometimes that extra sodium is just what you need as few triathletes consider sodium replacement during the course of the race. Especially on a very hot day.

Due to the busy schedules that we face in the modern world, it is harder to maintain our health and fitness. This unhealthy balance has let to the rising trend of weight gain in the Western world.
